Adele Florence Slattery
Utica
Adele Florence Slattery,
66, walked unaided into the Arms of the Lord on July 28, 1994, at St. Elizabeth's
Hospital.
Adele was born on November
25, 1927, in Flushing, Long Island, the only child of the late William
E. and Adele Florence (Collins) Steubner. Adele's father's untimely
passing in 1945 was always a source of sadness for her. Consequently,
Adele and her mother remained tightly bonded until her mother's passing
on September 10, 1973.
In 1945, Adele and her
mother moved to Lakewood, NJ. It was there that she met and was courted
by a young World War II Army veteran, Lawrence M. Slattery, Jr., of Jackson,
NJ. They were married on November 24, 1947, in St. Mary's of the
Lake Catholic Church (but they couldn't dance). "Juney" predeceased
her on June 11, 1993, ending 46 years of shared devotion and friendship.
Physically challenged
from birth and remaining so all her life, Mom never was the one to say
"why me?" She met and adapted to that challenge throughout her life.
Mom leaves behind three
beloved children, Mrs. Kathleen Tyrrell, of Utica, Mrs. Thomas Slattery,
of Austin, TX, and Ms. Joyce Slattery, of Utica; seven grandchildren, Mrs.
Marlene Thompson, Ms. Denis Fenimore, Mrs. Cheryl Cobb, Mrs. Lanette Paul,
Rocky, Nelson and Andrw: also seven great-grandchildren, Michael, Serita
and George Thompson, Cody Moore, Julana and C.J. Cobb, and Diamond K. Paul.
The family hearfully extends
their gratitude to the staff of 3-B at St. Elizabeth's , especially Sheila,
Allie and John, and also to the staff at Broadacres S.N.F., especially
Darwin, for the care and compassion shown to Mother.
Adele's daughter Kathy
is at a loss for words to properly thank Dr. Bruce Elwell.
A Funeral Mass will be
held Saturday at 9:30 at Historic Old St. John's Church. Interment
will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are on Friday from 7-9
at the Friedel, Williams, Coriale & Edmunds Funeral Home, Court at
York Sts., Utica.
The family respectfully
requests that flowers be omitted.
In John 14: Jesus
assures us that in his Father's house there are many mansions. In
one of them, we believe Mom is reunited with her beloved father and mother
and is finally dancing with Daddy.
