LAST AMERICAN TRAGEDY by Audrey
Lewis of the Observer Dispatch Newspaper
Big Moose Lake--Roy Higby,
the last living link to the 1906 "American Tragedy" murder, died Tuesday
at the age of 97.
A native of big Moose lake, he operated
the Higby House at Big Moose Lake and was active in the Big Moose Fire
Department.
Higby gained some fame over the years
with his claim that he found the body of Grace (Billy) Brown, 20, in Big
Moose Lake on July 12, 1906.
Brown's murder and the subsequent
arrest and trial of 23-year old Chester Gillette, her lover, became national
front-page news. The story provided the basis for Theodore Dreiser's classic
1926 novel " An American Tragedy".
In 1931, the novel was adapted into
a film of the same name. The 1950 film "A Place in the Sun" was also based
on the novel.
The murder case was also the basis
of former Observer Dispatch reporter, Craig Brandon's 1986 non-fiction
account, "Murder in the Adirondacks."
In an 1985 Observer Dispatch interview,
Higby said he had told his story more than 10,000 to times numerous journalists,
college professors,and authors.
Higby was 13 at the time of the murder
and working for the Zilpha, a steamboat that carried mail and tourists
around the lake. The steamboat was used by the search party organized after
someone reported that a small boat had capsized.
Higby said he was looking over the
steamboat's side when he noticed Brown at the bottom of the lake, about
eight feet down.
After Higby returned from the search,
he learned that the woman's name was Grace Brown, that she was from South
Otselic in Chenango County, and that authorities had begun searching for
the man who had accompanied her. Two days later, Gillette was arrested
in Albany and charged with the murder.
Higby attended the trial in Herkimer,
but never testified. Gillette was convicted and eventually executed in
the electric chair at Auburn prison.
In 1974, Higby published an autobiography,
"A Man from the Past," which included a chapter on "An American Tragedy."
Funeral arrangements are with the
Eldridge-Groves Funeral home in Old Forge. A memorial service has been
set for Jan. 12 at the Big Moose Chapel.
