Village Burial Ground

Pinnacle Road, Town of Paris

The Village Burial Ground once surrounded the original Methodist Church, which was built in 1801. When the present building was erected in 1842, it became necessary to relocate the bodies and establish a new cemetery. There are no records available on how many bodies were moved.

In 1849, when the Sauquoit Valley Cemetery Association was founded, some of the bodies were again removed to this newest cemetery. The Village Burial Ground gradually fell into ruin until the mid 1990's when a contractor (a new member of the SVUMC and his wife) became interested in restoring it. At his own expense, he removed many of the trees which had grown up in the cemetery. Another church member, a Boy Scout earning his Eagle Award badge, got in on the project. As we uncovered stones, I began documenting and photographing the stones as well as searching  for information on each person. This listing is up to date information - and who knows how many more are buried there or if more stones may lie just under the surface.
