 FIRST REGIMENT, INFANTRY

In accordance with section I, general orders, No. 8, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant-general’s office, Albany, April 27, 1898, the commanding officer of the third brigade, national guard, Brigadier-General Robert Shaw Oliver, organized two regiments from organizations of his brigade, forming one of these two regiments of the tenth, twelfth and seventeenth battalions and the forty-fourth separate company and designating it the “first regiment, national guard, composed of organizations of the third brigade.”  The regiment thus organized consisted then of companies A, B, C, D of the tenth battalion; the fifth, fourteenth, sixteenth and twenty-fourth separate companies of the twelfth battalion; the third, twentieth and thirty-third separate companies of the seventeenth battalion, and the forty-fourth separate company.  It appearing that the sixteenth separate company would find it difficult to recruit the required number of men, it was relieved and replaced by the fifteenth separate company.

Upon the recommendation of the brigade commander, General Oliver, the Governor of the state, appointed on April 29, 1898:

General Thomas H. Barber, formerly inspector- general of the state, colonel, and Major Horatio Stacpole, tenth battalion, lieutenant-colonel of this regiment.
