1607-Universal anti-Catholic bias brought to Jamestown.
1676-Maryland's population 20,000. [1,670 were Catholic who could not hold office or vote].
1697-Richard Coote [anti-Catholic] appointed governor of NY.
1700-Assembly passes a law prohibiting Catholic priests from entering NY colony, punishable by imprisonment. In addition colonists who aided priests were to be fined and punished.
1750s-Maryland's population 92,308. [7,692 were Catholic].
1757-Pennslvania has 1,365 Catholics. [949 were German].
1784-St Peter's Church erected in New York City.
1785-Bishop John Carroll reports state of Catholicism in the US.

Maryland had 15,000 Catholics [9,000 freemen, 3,000 white children, and 3000 African slaves].

Virginia less than 200 Catholics who only saw a priest a few times a year.

Pennsylvania had 7,000 Catholics among whom were a few Negroes.

New York had 1,500 Catholics with no exact information about them.

The area from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River reported many Catholics, mostly French-speaking but only one priest working among them.

1785-Bishop John Carroll reports statistics of priests.

Maryland had 19 priests, some in bad health and one suspected of immoral conduct.

Pennsylvania had 5 priests, all near or above age 70.

1789-German immigrants erect Holy Trinity Church in Philadelphia
1797-St. Mary's Church built in Albany, NY [2nd Catholic church in NY].
1808-Baltimore made the first archdiocese of the USA with dioceses of Bardstown [Kentucky], Boston, New York, and Philadelphia.
1810-St Nicholas Church opens in New York City. One catholic parish served a community of 10,000 people.
1814-Opening of St. Joseph's Orphanage in Philadelphia, the first Catholic Asylum for children in the US.
1823-Shortage of priests necessitates gathering of Catholics in homes, stores, etc to worship.
1847-Diocese of Buffalo formed. It included a north/south corridor that included Rochester. It included counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming.
1847-Diocese of Albany formed. It included the rest of upper New York from Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan counties on the south to the Syracuse area on the west, Canada on the north, and Vermont and Massachusetts on the east. By 1847, 12 churches had been built and a dozen priests ministered in the area that now defines the Albany Diocese.
1868-Diocese of Rochester formed.It bordered Lake Ontario on the north and Pennsylvania on the south. It included counties of Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Schuyler, Stueben, Tioga, Tompkins, Yates and Wayne.
1872-Diocese of Ogdensburg formed. It included counties of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, parts of Hamilton and Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence.
1886-Diocese of Syracuse formed. It included counties of Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego.
