Origin of Law Reunions

The year 1866 is a memorable one for the Law Family, as it was in that year that the holding of annual picnics by the family began.  These have been a source of much pleasure to those who have been fortunate enough to attend them.  They have been the means of strongly welding the golden links of friendship and kinship.  It is seldom that one meets a family whose members have a more fraternal spirit existing among them.

It may be of interest to know how the annual reunion originated.  Most of the older generations of Laws lived in Oneida County, N.Y., where many of the posterity still reside.  One be one families moved into other counties and States until now there are members in many of the commonwealths of this great republic.

In 1866, one of the granddaughters of our common ancestor, Consider Law, returned from the West where she was living at that time, to visit her relatives in Oneida County.  This was Cornelia Law Williams, who now resides in Canastota, New York.  While here, she with Adelia Bessee, Mercy Williams, Rosina Law, Carrie Best, Jane Lang and Sarah Law one day had a gathering at the home of Maria Halleck.  Of this company, only Cornelia and her sister, Jane, are still living.  These were all granddaughters of Consider Law, with the exception of Sarah Law, who was a grandson’s wife.  They had a most enjoyable time together.

One of the party, Adelia Bessee, suggested that a Law Picnic be held before Cornelia returned to her home.  This met with the unanimous approval of the guests, and they arranged then and there for a picnic to be held in their Uncle Abner Waters’s orchard.

The plans made materialized on August 1, 1866, when the descendants of “Capt.” Consider Law, as he was called, held a picnic on the premises of Abner H. Waters near Bartlett, Oneida County, New York.  They formed themselves into a permanent organization, electing George W. Law, president, and William C. Law, secretary and treasurer.  The former was a son of Consider Law and the latter a grandson.  William C. Law was the father of our present secretary and treasurer.

It was decided to have another meeting on October the third, at the home of Russel Williams in order to perfect some plans in regard to a record book in which to keep the names of the descendants of Consider Law, also giving the date of birth, marriage, and death, and other facts concerning each.  A committee of seven men and their wives was appointed to devise a plan for the book.  The president appointed the following men for the work — Mark Cheney, John Comstock, Morris Halleck, Seth Smith, Russel Williams, Alvah Waters and William C. Law, all of whom have since passed away.  This committee was to have the material for the book ready for the printer and binder by the first day of January, 1867.

The records kept in the book up to the present date are quite complete --- most of the eight branches having a full record from Consider Law through the generations down to his great great great great grandchildren.  It is of priceless value to the hundreds of his descendants.

Capt. Consider Law

Biographical Sketch

Consider Law was born in New Lebanon, N. Y., in 1756.

Of his ancestry or immediate family very little is known, except that he had a brother Joseph, who was also the father of several children.

His personal appearance commanded general admiration.  He was five feet nine inches in height, well proportioned, with clear complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, an aquiline nose, and Washingtonian mouth and chin.  He had a clear and melodious voice which was heard with pleasure in the Sabbath services.  In the various social circles in which he mingled he would often be heard relating some pleasing incident, or singing some song for the amusement of the company.

He received only a common school education and was not able to give more than this to his children, still he had a clear mind, and superior business ability, while in repect to integrity he was entirely beyond the betrayal of any trust.  He was also in a marked degree daring and generous.  He loved liberty and hated oppression.

He was a soldier and an officer in the Revolutionary War.  He fought at Bunker Hill and in various other engagements.  He stood sentry over Maj. John Andre, the British spy, and though it was attempted with large offers, he could not be bribed to give him the pass-word.

He married his first wife, whose maiden name was Martha Allen, about the year 1782; she lived but a short time after the birth of her only child, whose name was also Martha.

He was subsequently married to Miss Sarah Grommon, about the year 1786, who survived him about twenty years, dying March 2d, 1840, at the residence of her son, George W. Law, with great peace and triumphant faith in the Savior.

By her he had two sons, Consider, Jr., and Geo. W., and five daughters, Sally, Irena, Maria, and the twins, Caroline and Adaline.

He was one of the early settlers in the old town of Paris, Oneida County, N. Y.  The place where the village of Clinton now is, had then been settled about two years.  From there he cut a road through the forest, to what has long been known as Post street, where he bought a small farm and located his family.  As is common to frontier life, he and his family suffered many deprivations.  While living on Post street, the family were sorely annoyed by frequent visits from the Indians, especially when he was absent.  On one occasion, when he was away from home, the Indians entered his dwelling, brandishing their tomahawks and knives, and putting his wife and little ones in great fear, and commenced their depredations on some dried beef that was hanging in the room.  While they were devouring their plunder and endeavoring to secure what they could not devour, the husband returned, and he being a man of true courage and great activity, took his rawhide and gave them a severe chastising, making them leave their plunder and beat a hasty retreat.  They soon learned that he was a man not easily affrighted, and afterwards would pass by on their own trail peaceably.

While living on his farm, he became acquainted with Mr. George Kirkland, who was reported to be very wealthy, and whose business was so greatly extended that it was necessary for him to engage some one to assist him, and seeing that the subject of this sketch was a man of talent and business qualifications, readily made him a good and generous offer of a salary and a mile square of wilderness land, embracing the present Hamilton College grounds adjacent to the village of Clinton, if he would assist him in his business.  This offer he accepted with high hopes and bright anticipations of the future.

He commenced the transaction of Mr. K.’s business, signed papers, and otherwise made himself responsible, if so be Kirkland should fail.

Before he had been in his employ three years, by an unexpected turn in fortune, Kirkland failed and became a bankrupt, consequently the little farm on Post street had to be sold to help pay Kirkland’s indebtedness.  This was not all; the officers came and levied on and sold the household furniture, and even the children’s clothing, to liquidate this debt.  Neither was this all, nor the greatest.  Those high hopes and bright anticipations of the future were all blasted forever.  Here he learned how frail and uncertain are earthly hopes and worldly anticipations.  This was a heavy blow to him and had a sad effect on his mind, from which he never wholly recovered.

He lived in the town of Paris about eleven or twelve years, having emigrated there about the year 1789 or 1790.  In the year 1801 or 1802 he moved to Adams, Jefferson County, N.Y., but only to continue an experience of pioneer life, suffering many deprivations and hardships, and amid even denser forests, where there were neither roads nor any of the conveniences that the inhabitants of a long settled country possess and enjoy.  But notwithstanding this, he felled the “waving lords of the forests,” and cleared them away, and in their place the “grass of the golden grain” were soon growing.  When the grain was matured and harvested, then another embarrassment was in his way.  There was no mill in which to grind it.  He went to work and constructed one, such as would now, in this last half of the nineteenth century, be the occasion of much merriment, but was then really a beneficial institution, and for many miles around familiarly known as “Law’s Mill.”  In construction, ti was simply a hard maple stump, hollowed out, in which worked a heavy pestle, attached to a spring pole.  The use of it was free to all, and as any man with a strong arm became a practical miller, it was extensively patronized.

He lived in Jefferson county about seven years, and then moved from there to the town of Kirkland, Oneida county, N. Y.  There he remained until the year 1816, when by the persuasion of his boys (one eighteen, the other sixteen years old), he, with his family, moved to the north part of the town of Westmoreland, in the same county.  There they purchased a tract of wilderness land, built a log house and commenced clearing the land.  After a hard struggle they succeeded in paying for their land.

Here he and four of his children, Consider, Jr., George, Sally and Maria, on June 20, 1818, helped form the “Second Baptist Church of Christ in Westmoreland,” which was later known as the South Baptist Church, and still later as Bartlett Baptist Church.

This was his last abiding place on earth and on August 4th, 1820, he went to his heavenly home.  The earthly remains rest in the burying ground of the above named church.

May his descendants revere his memory and emulate his virtues.
