WHITEWATER - WAH-MUSH-PE-SHINGS
The Nebraska City News of the 3d instant
contains a long account of the marriage of a Pawnee Chief to a blood royal
squaw of the Otoe tribe. The bridegroom was named WHITEWATER, and the bride
WAH-MUSH-PE-SHINGS. We extract the following:
The chieftain's daughter was elegantly dressed
in a red flannel shirt with blue calico border, a checked apron, a summer-killed
buffalo robe, and a white felt hat. Her jewels were magnificent. From either
auricular depended bright ornaments of brass, tin and copper.
We must not omit to mention that Miss Wah-mush-pe-shinga
also wore a "red petticoat." embroidered according to a design of her own,
with porcupine quills, representing a desperate dog fight. Her entire wardrobe
and jewelry could not have cost less than six thousand dollars in Fonteneile
money.
The bridegroom was attired in all the magnificence
which his rank and wealth demanded. He wore a standing shirt collar, a
medal of President Pierce, a blue straight-collared soldier coat with brass
buttons, and an elegant pair of Spanish spurs, while his stalwart loins
were admirably clothed in an ancient coffee sack. Altogether the appearance
of both the bride and groom was appropriate to their high sphere in life.
The most sumptuous feast awaited the guests
at the residence of the bride's father. It was spread in a camp kettle
and suspended over the fire that burned in the center of that princely
lodge. It consisted of young dog meat, very tender, blue corn, and old
dog meat, beaver tails and mule steak, fresh fish and sugar, making, altogether,
one of the most palatable and nourishing compounds that ever graced a royal
camp kettle. The horn-spoons of accidental luxury seldom convey to educated
palate viands more tempting and delicious. As for drinks, corn whiskey,
made of red pepper, tobacco plugs and rain water, together with molasses-sweetened
coffee, made up the list.
Among the distinguished persons present
we did not fail to notice the six Mesdames Petanasharo, the wives of that
eminent "Injin" who is now at Washington, visiting James Buchanan on official
business. Also, Mr. Whitecow, of the Omaha principality, Mr. Big Soldier,
Esquire, Wild-cat and Hon. Short-tailed-Elk. (RCApr14/1858)

A correspondent writes from Stonington,

"Baron LIMBOURG, the gentlemanly Ambassador
from the Netherlands, and Miss CASS, daughter of the Democratic Secretary
of State, were united in holy matrimony this afternoon by the Rev. Mr.
Weston, rector of Calvary Church, Stonington. The old gentleman was present,
and gave away the bride. The ceremony was marked, at least inside the sacred
walls, by the absence of all display --quiet and plain, --becoming to sensible
folk.
"The nuptials over, the party returned for
a little while to the Wadawanuck House. The General in the mean time wended
his way afoot to the depot, where soon after, came the happy bride and
bridegroom en route for Newport, and, after a few minutes' conversation,
he bid them a fatherly farewell.
"The shipping in the harbor displayed the
'flag of our Union,' while the booming of cannon announced far and near
to the erewhile anti-foreign-element inhabitants this other link binding
the American and European heart in loving harmony. The 'All aboard,' followed
by a shriek of the steam-horse, sped eastward the train, and soon the assemblage
thronging the depot, and of rather cosmopolitan character dispersed, discussing
on their way homeward the latest 'great event' of the day. (RCSep08/1858)
