HASBROUCK - SAYER
John W. Hasbrouck Esq., of the Whig Press,
has married a Doctor, which sounds rather strange. But the age is
a progressive one and he will be to no expense for a "family physician."
A correspondent of the Elmira Advertiser writing from Newburgh, gives the
following account of the ceremony;
"We are among a few assembled at the residence of the bride's father at Warwick, Orange county, July 27th, 1856 to witness the marriage of JOHN W. HASBROUCK, editor of the Whig press, Middletown, NY, with Miss Dr. LYDIA SAYER, editor of the Sybil, of the same place. The bride was dressed in the "reform costume" --skirt of white India book, with pants of white satin; a basque of brocade silk, (color of ashes of roses,) trimmed with dress lace; no ornaments except a simple breast-pin. The ceremony was performed by themselves. The bride ignored that part of the accustomed marriage which demands of woman undue subjection and obedience, yet promising equally with the groom to stand true to his side in all the duties of life --each appealing to the other for their approval and each consenting to the terms adopted by themselves. A short prayer was offered by the elder brother of the bride." (RCAub27/1856)
