McKEOWN - SOBIESKI
Mount Carmel, Pa., Jan. 18, 1886 --For some years John Sobieski, said to be a distant relative of his famous countryman, has lived in a pretty little cottage a mile or more from Mount Carmel.  His daughter PAULINA is a charming blonde and highly educated, speaking all the European languages fluently.  Mr. Sobieski welcomed all his countrymen living in this district to his home, and from time to time gallant Poles sought to obtain the hand of Paulina in marriage.

It was an unwritten law in Mr. Sobieski's household, however, that none but a wealthy Pole should ever  wed his daugher.  This became known to a Polish merchant of Shenandoah, who had acquired a large fortune by trading with his countrymen.  The father favored the suitor, and, to all apprearances, the young lady did likewise.  Yesterday was the time fixed for the wedding, but at the appointed hour the father and the Shenandoah merchant learned that Paulina, under the pretence of visiting Philadelphia friends, had met her real lover, JOHN McKEOWN, in a Jersey town, where the two had been married.

For a time a furious storm raged in the Sobieski cottage, and the father consulted counsel to have the marriage annulled.  He was informed by his lawyer that, since both were of age, an had satistied Jersey justice, the marriage was legal.  A few hours later he forgave his daughter and invited her back to his house.  The Shenandoah merchant returned to his home almost broken hearted.  (RCJan22/1886)

VAN VLECK   [anniversary]
Mr. and Mrs. CHARLES VAN VLECK, of Rome, New York, have been undergoing some agreeable surprises of late.  Sunday, January 17, was the 25th anniversary of their marriage.  Saturday evening, during the absence of his wife, Mr. Van Vleck received a call from some twenty-five of his shop mates of the Locomotive Works, headed by F. X. Greenia, who, in behalf of those accompanying him, in a pleasing speech presented Mr. V. a very fine silver water pitcher and gold-lined goblet.  Mr. Van Vleck soon found words to express his feelings, which he did very satisfactorily.  After a short social chat the party left, wishing Mr. and Mrs. V. many returns of the day.

Thinking the above was sufficient for one 25th anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Van Vleck were unprepared for the descent made upon them Monday evening, when about twenty of their neighbors and friends called to pay their respects and pass a social hour.  Before leaving, Rev. H. H. Peabody took occasion to congratulate the host and hostess presenting them a handsome silver cake basket.  Mr. Van Vleck, having had a little experience made a happy response.  May they live to enjoy the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.  (RCJan22/1886)

ARNOLD   [anniversary]
The golden wedding anniversary of Rev. EBENEZER ARNOLD and WIFE was commemerated last Monday by the assembling in their home in Rome, New York of a large number of friends and relatives.  A table reaching the entire length of a large dining room was filled three times before all the guests had partaken of a bountious supper furnished by the friends of the worthy couple.  Mr. Arnold recounted interesting reminiscences of his early married like, and Rev. Mr. Shepherd (whose wife is a cousin of Mrs. Arnold) related in a pleasing manner how the bride and groom of 19 first made each other's acquaintance fifty years ago.

Mr. Arnold also read a poem written for the occasion by a brother preacher and old friend, Rev. Byron Alden, of Wisconsin, who is now 80 years of age.  It abounded in pleasant allusions, and was very appropriate.  Poems by Rev. Dwight Williams and a lady friend in Maine were also read, and greatly enjoyed by those present.  And not the least pleasant feature of the occasion was the gifts of which they were the recipients, amounting at least $300 in all.  Of this sum $100 was contributed by their children, $20 by other relatives and $120 from brother ministers and other friends.  Altogether it was an occasion long to be remembered.  (RCFeb05/1886)

AMMON - BRIGGS
Ava, New York news item:  A young gentleman from West Leyden, NY, by the name of GEORGE AMMON, has for quite a length of time been a frequent visitor at Briggs' hotel.  It was not supposed by those that were acquainted with him that he came there for the purpose of obtaining drink, as he was not known to be a drinking person.  After a while the fact became known that he was one of those who believed the truth of the Bible saying "that it is not good for man to be alone."

Consequently his acquaintance with Miss EVA BRIGGS ripened into courtship, and their courtship finally culminated in marriage.  Last Wednesday (October 13, 1886) evening was the eventful time anxiously looked forward to, when the twain were to be made one.  After the sun had decended below the western horizon, and the shades of twilight were fast passing away, the invited guests began to put in an appearance.  Mr. and Mrs. Briggs welcomed them heartily, and at an early hour the house was well filled.  Rev. J. R. Decker, pastor of the Ava M.E. Church, tied the nuptial knot.  The West Leyden Cornet Band was present and furnished its share of music for the occassion, and "all went merry as a marriage bell."  The presents were both numerous and valuable.  A bountiful repast was served, to which all present did ample justice.  Mr. and Mrs. Ammon have the best wishes of the entire community.  (RCOct22/1886)
