Pohl Gas Engine Company @ 1900
Geo D Pohl established
his Gas Engine Co in the Town of Ava in the
1890s and moved the company to Vernon, NY, @ 1898. Moving with
the company was
machinist/ draftsman Solomon Butler, with wife Esther Mahedy Butler,
and children Zora
and Joseph. The factory was located behind the West Shore Hotel
[more recently
known as Charlesbois'] on Verona St near the railroad.
Solomon built the house
next to the hotel which was later owned by the Cecil Williams family.
Esther's
McKay nieces and nephews visited from Canada. Frank and Myron
McKay went to
work for Pohl's. Their sister Mina married Pohl employee Allen
Fulmer in 1907.
In 1914 the rest of the McKay family moved to Vernon. I believe
the Pohl Co
later merged or became part of Ueblers Milking Machine Mfg Co in Vernon.
